Zanzibar Unveiled: The Insider Guide to Culture, Comfort, and Connection

Zanzibar is calling. Are you ready to answer? At Vaa Africa Adventures, we believe in traveling smarter, deeper, and more respectfully. We handle the logistical details so you can focus on making memories that last a lifetime.

Before you board your flight to the “Spice Island,” here is our essential insider guide to navigating Zanzibar like a pro.

1. Cultural Etiquette (The Most Important!)

Zanzibar is rich in tradition and predominantly Muslim. Showing respect for local customs ensures a warmer welcome and a deeper connection to the people.

  • The “Right Hand Rule”: This is the most vital tip to remember. In local culture, the left hand is considered unclean. Always use your right hand when shaking hands, giving or receiving items, and especially when eating.

  • Dress Modestly: While swimwear is perfect for the beach, please cover your shoulders and knees when walking through Stone Town or local villages. Keeping a sarong handy in your bag is a lifesaver.

  • Ask Before You Snap: Zanzibaris are incredibly friendly, but taking photos of people (especially women and children) or their homes without permission is considered disrespectful. A simple “Samahani, naweza piga picha?” (Excuse me, can I take a photo?) goes a long way.

  • Public Displays of Affection: Keep affection subtle (like holding hands) in public areas, particularly near mosques or in conservative villages.

2. Money & Logistics

Being prepared for the local economy will save you a lot of stress at the market.

  • Cash is King: While luxury resorts take cards, smaller shops, local markets, and dhow captains rarely do. Always carry Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) for day-to-day spending.

  • Newer USD Only: If you bring US Dollars, ensure the bills were printed after 2006 and are in perfect condition. Older or damaged bills are often rejected by banks and local businesses.

  • Eco-Alert: Plastic bags are strictly banned in Tanzania. Avoid packing items in plastic “Ziploc” style bags to prevent fines at the airport.

3. Timing Your Visit

Where you stay depends heavily on what you want to do.

  • Follow the Tides: The East Coast (Matemwe, Paje) is very tidal; at low tide, the water can recede for miles. If you love swimming all day, we suggest Nungwi or Kendwa in the North, where the beaches remain swimmable regardless of the tide.

  • Ramadan Awareness: If visiting during the holy month of Ramadan, many local restaurants outside of resorts will be closed during the day. Out of respect for those fasting, please avoid eating or drinking in public during daylight hours.

4. Health & Safety

Stay feeling your best so you don’t miss a moment of the adventure.

  • Hydration: Never drink tap water—not even for brushing your teeth if you have a sensitive stomach. Stick to bottled or filtered water.

  • Sun Protection: The Zanzibar sun is deceptively strong due to the reflection off the white sand. Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect both your skin and the beautiful coral reefs.
